Robert Bosch Production NV based in Tienen is part of the Bosch Group and is a world leader in the development and production of wiper blades and wiper arms.

Founded in 1973 the Tienen plant has approximately 1,100 employees. Tienen is the lead plant for manufacturing facilities in Asia, Europe and South America as a knowledge and development center.

The Challenge

IMA was challenged to build a new machine which places a customer logo and a wear indicator on the end caps of a window wiper.

The machine had to be flexible, easily adjustable and able to handle a high volume of end caps.

The changeover between products needed to be fast and done without additional adjustment work.

The total cycle time for the application of the logo and the wear indicator needed to be max. 2.5sec/cap.

The quality of the final product needed to be controlled and assured during production.

 

 

Solution

IMA has developed and built a machine which sequentially performs the following actions:

  • Supply of plastic end caps.
  • Buffering of products.
  • Product separation.
  • Loading the turntable with 6-axis robot.
  • Check the product position.
  • Laser engraving of the product with customer logo.
  • Supply of wear indicator sticker.
  • Apply the wear indicator followed by pressing with SCARA robot (4-axis).
  • Quality control of logo and sticker with camera.
  • Transport of approved products to packaging.
  • Removal of defective products to scrap station.

In addition to the above points, the machine has an automatic changeover function between products, a changeover does not require any additional actions. When choosing a new product, the settings are made automatically by the machine.

Thanks to this machine BOSCH can count on an increased production capacity. The IMA solution offers a high level of flexibility with a very short changeover time. Additionally, the machine offers 100% quality control, this underlines the reputation of BOSCH as a qualitative manufacturer.
